Elena Crespo talks about the causes of divorce in Spain for the program Opinacat on 8TV Catalonia.

Did you know that divorce in Spain occurs, on average, before the age of 50 and after 16 years of marriage?
Since 2014, breakups have been decreasing, but after the pandemic an increase of 13.2 percent is expected, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Cohabitation, lack of communication, stress, work, children… are some of the causes.

Why did we get divorced?

Statistics tell us that love ends at the age of 16 and, as I stated in my speech, the main cause is that marriage itself is complicated, in the same way that society is also becoming increasingly complex.
New technologies have been very beneficial in areas such as business, but they have facilitated infidelity and disconnection between couples.
Added to this are recent conjunctures such as the Covid pandemic, the economic crisis… As I perceive it every day in my professional practice, the saying that “when there are economic problems, love goes out the window” is true.
I also perceive that there are many frictions related to the education of children: each parent comes with a different educational system and it is frequent to meet in the office with a parent who is more flexible and another one who is stricter.
The clash of visions is a major wear and tear.
If we add to this the monotony of day-to-day life, bills, work, stress… the combination brings us closer to the end of the couple.
Above all, I believe that a key factor is the empowerment of women and their incorporation into the world of work: our professional aspirations are increasingly greater and we aspire to higher positions, which undoubtedly represents a paradigm shift.
Weariness, falling out of love, infidelity, economic difficulties, discrepancies in child rearing, irritability or bad temper are the main causes of divorce according to the INE.
In this context, the breakup occurs frequently after the age of 40, when the woman already has her children, her professional career well underway… and decides not to fight for the relationship anymore.
It is undoubtedly a reality that both partners, when both are workers, live more stressed and the conciliation is more and more complicated: working professionally with the long hours that exist in Spain and arriving home with an extra stress, the lack of help from the man… are noticed and generate an important wear and tear.
Finally, one of the points that most attracts my attention is the so-called financial infidelityMany times couples do not know how much the other partner earns.
This generates many conflicts when there is ignorance in this area, especially if there is no equitable distribution of expenses.
