What can we do with the things that our ex leaves behind after leaving? This is the question posed by the program ‘Julia en la Onda’, of the radio station Onda Cero, directed by Julia Otero, in which I had the pleasure of intervening with some contributions and advice from the legal point of view aimed precisely at lowering tensions and avoiding unnecessary conflicts in a breakup situation. You can listen to the complete program in this link.
A good way to avoid conflicts regarding the material things owned by the couple or by one of the parties is to assume together the task of making a distribution list: “In matters of divorce or separation, it is best to make an inventory for the distribution of the belongings in the home”. Thus, as a result we will have a balanced list, the fruit of consensus.
On the other hand, it is our advice that, in case we decide to leave the home we share with our partner and pack our bags to move to another place, we should not forget to take those valuables that are our exclusive property in order to avoid conflicts later. “If a person is going to leave the home, the best thing to do before leaving is to take these objects with them, because later it will be difficult to prove that that watch, that piece of jewelry, that painting… has disappeared.” From this space we thank Onda Cero once again for having counted on us to illustrate from a legal point of view what we should do in situations of conflictive couple breakup.
